چکیده

Rising reliance on foreign energy coupled with increasing greenhouse emissions have compelled policy makers to promote cellulosic feedstock for ethanol production. This study evaluates existing technologies available for converting cellulosic biomass into ethanol. Technical details of existing conversion technologies are discussed followed by their current adoption status. Economics of cellulosic ethanol production using existing conversion technologies and emerging conversion technologies have also been characterized. It is expected that the review will be helpful in allocating resources efficiently for streamlining the whole initiative of cellulosic ethanol production.

Next-generation cellulosic ethanol technologies and their contribution to a sustainable Africa.

The world is currently heavily dependent on oil, especially in the transport sector. However, rising oil prices, concern about environmental impact and supply instability are among the factors that have led to greater interest in renewable fuel and green chemistry alternatives. Lignocellulose is the only foreseeable renewable feedstock for sustainable production of transport fuels. The main tec...

Prospects of Cellulosic Ethanol from Sugarcane Bagasse

AGRICULTURAL residues such as grain straws and corn stover are abundant, readily available biomass feedstocks for the production of next generation biofuels, with collection and transport costs being a major component of their cost. Sugarcane bagasse is thus an especially attractive biomass feedstock in that it is an agricultural residue already present in large quantities at sugar and ethanol ...

Key Pretreatment Technologies on Cellulosic Ethanol Production

Conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuel ethanol involves pretreatments followed by enzyme-catalyzed hydrolysis to generate fermentable sugars. Efficient pretreatment method can significantly enhance hydrolysis of biomass and thus reduce ethanol production cost. Cellulosic plant materials are mainly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, the cheapest source of fermentable sugars....

Impact of pretreatment and downstream processing technologies on economics and energy in cellulosic ethanol production

BACKGROUND While advantages of biofuel have been widely reported, studies also highlight the challenges in large scale production of biofuel. Cost of ethanol and process energy use in cellulosic ethanol plants are dependent on technologies used for conversion of feedstock. Process modeling can aid in identifying techno-economic bottlenecks in a production process. A comprehensive techno-economi...

Bioenergy crop productivity and potential climate change mitigation from marginal lands in the United States: An ecosystem modeling perspective

Growing biomass feedstocks from marginal lands is becoming an increasingly attractive choice for producing biofuel as an alternative energy to fossil fuels. Here, we used a biogeochemical model at ecosystem scale to estimate crop productivity and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from bioenergy crops grown on marginal lands in the United States. Two broadly tested cellulosic crops, switchgrass, an...
